Apple Working on Own AI Chip for Data Centres

Sources cited by the Wall Street Journal report that Apple is working on developing its own artificial intelligence chips to support AI software in data centres. The company has fallen behind competitors in AI technology and has kept quiet about its plans in this area.

CEO Tim Cook expressed optimism about Apple’s prospects in AI and confirmed a substantial investment in the field. Internally dubbed Project ACDC (Apple Chips in the Data Centre), the initiative aims to leverage Apple’s expertise in chip design for server infrastructure. While specifics about the project’s launch are scarce, ACDC has been in progress for several years.

According to a report from the WSJ, Apple’s server chip is expected to prioritise running AI models for inference over training AI models, where Nvidia currently holds dominance.

While the ultimate outcome remains uncertain, the partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) will be pivotal for the ‘chip’ development and production.
